Precepts, principle, and popular opinion

June 2, 2010

Dale I. Goehrig, Florida’s newest Past Grand Master, implored public awareness and declared “Unity in Masonry” as the 2009-10 Grand Lodge year theme.

Public awareness is one of our primary goals this year.  To this end I am asking every Lodge to work toward achieving the “Mark Twain Award” for public awareness.  Every Lodge that participates will be a winner because their community will see that the local Lodge is contributing to its improvement.  We need to let the public know who we are and what we do, so they can take that first step and ask to join.”

That Felon-free Masonry heeded the call through exposing a cowan and revealing the incredulous ironies comprising his pseudo-membership garnered the approval of some and consternation of others.

But let us remember:

Truth:  an actual state of matter, being, and fact.

Integrity:  honest adherence to moral and ethical principles.

Entwined, these virtues are common threads within the tapestry of Masonry.  Unraveled, the fabric of the Craft is flawed.

One such blight is thrice convicted felon, James Anderson “Jimmy” Foster.  His failure to disclose an extensive, violent history when petitioning coupled with denial of the criminal record when it surfaced in September, 2009 is an affront to every Master Mason in good standing across the globe; past, present, and future.

But not all agree.

An Orlando reader says:  While all of this may be quite true, you have not offered the Brother a chance to defend himself.

Felon-free Masonry responds:  At no time during his deceitful membership did Foster disclose his background (including but not limited to three convictions, a 25 year prison sentence, fifteen year probationary term, and time served in prison facilities). Every minute of every day wrought opportunity to purge and come clean but alas, he purposely lived a sin of omission for over ten years.

This selfish behavior typifies what parole boards and probation officers often term “lack of remorse” and “failure to accept responsibility.”

A Facebook reader replies:  Expulsion!!

Felon-free Masonry agrees wholeheartedly and spells out the case in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Florida Digest of Masonic Law:

A Wyoming brother notes per Foster’s vandalism:  I see the point of bringing it to attention as it is a law broken by a law breaking man, in my thought; no longer a mason the man could be held responsible if it could be proven. I on the other hand would simply leave it and use it as an example situation and nothing more because it sounds like the vandalism was simply an attempt to stir up civil unrest in the the brotherhood and would have ultimately gone unpunished by local law.

Felon-free Masonry responds:  Foster’s 2007 debasement of city property was yet another in a litany of unnecessary harms and embarrassments wrought by him and proves blatant disrespect for the Craft, government, and law.

Witness the cowan’s handiwork upon a city of Tampa sidewalk:

A Tampa reader expressed strong opinions about Felon-free Masonry:

THE FILTH YOUR SENDING WILL GET YOUR BROUGHT UP ON CHARGES WITH THE GRAND LODGE AND CHARGED WITH CHARACTER ASSINATION. PUT THAT IN YOUR PIPE AND SMOKE IT.*   YOU ARE DISPICABLE PERSON, AND IF YOU ARE A MASON, YOU NEED TO RESIGN SINCE YOU THINK SO LITTLE OF THE FRATERNITY.

Felon-free Masonry replies:  While proper “assination” commencement is a penumbra, would all agree that it is impossible to assassinate character where none exists?  Foster firmly established his character, or lack thereof, through three felony convictions and withholding his criminal record from the Craft for over a decade.

And by filth, does he mean exposing the felonious interloper who fraudulently entered the fraternity or perhaps the lodge Chaplain who appeared in the highest grossing adult film in history?

Tampa reader continues:  I suggest you present yourself to the Jurisprudence Committee as well as the Penal Affairs Committee and bring forth all your comments and accusations. I am sure they would be most happy to allow your testimony on the matter. You have denigrated the Grand Lodge Of Florida and Kentucky, the Grand Master, the Penal Affairs Committee and the Brethren of Hillsborough Lodge. So go to it if you’ve got the guts, which I doubt very strongly you have, but good luck. See you in Orlando.

Felon-free Masonry:  The truth has been laid at their feet.

The information displayed is not an indictment of the particular Blue Lodge infiltrated by  convicted, violent felon James Anderson Foster.   Many within the Craft embody the tenets upon which the fraternity was founded and are of decent, respectful character.

The shame lies not in the Craft but within the felon.

That Goehrig told Kentucky’s Grand Master about Florida’s background screening program designed to prevent entry of felons into the fraternity yet he allegedly allowed one who usurped Hillsborough Lodge to remain a member is contradictory.

Is it true that Goehrig met with felon Foster pre-Masonic trial and allowed him to plot his own punishment?  Was the Grand Master so easily misled and if so, did he enact on behalf of the cowan or the Craft?

Felon-free Masonry respects those who’ve spoken out and whose words offer a gentle reminder:  freedom of speech protects the words we don’t like just as it safeguards those that we do.

That, and don’t shoot the messenger.
