Bond, can James be Bonded?

May 24, 2010

If this missive per fidelity bonding procedures is correct, a thrice convicted felon who withheld his criminal history may have been bonded by an unwitting Grand Lodge of Florida during his stints as Junior/Senior Warden and Worshipful Master.

The writer asserts that Section 22.01 of the Florida Digest of Masonic Law “states that the five elected Lodge Officers of each Lodge in the Grand Lodge of Florida, are covered by a surety bond paid for by Grand Lodge.”

It is unknown if the surety applies to felons; that answer must come from Grand Lodge.

Brethren, previously a question came up about insurance coverage (bonding) for the elected officers of our Lodge. I stated at the time that I was certain all Lodge elected officers were covered by a universal bond by Grand Lodge. Several Brothers said they weren’t sure, and others said they didn’t believe such a system, was in place. I apologize to all concerned for not following through on researching the issue. I attended Grand Lodge this year with several of you, and received the various material. Included with the various reports was the report of our Grand Master M. W. Robert P. Harry. On page 63 of his report, top of the page is an article entitled “FIDELITY BOND.”  It refers you to Section 22.01 of the Digest of Masonic Law. In the brief explanation, it states that the five elected Lodge Officers of each Lodge in the Grand Lodge of Florida, are covered by a surety bond paid for by Grand Lodge. I suggest all concerned read the entire section 22.01, for your enlightenment. The most important part that I consider, is the fact that “each officer” is covered up to $25,000.00, and this was enacted in its present amount in 1980.
